Remote contract work from outside the US: what to check before applying
Remote does not always mean worldwide. Check country eligibility, time zones, payment access, and contract terms before applying from outside the US.
A remote job describes where the work happens. It does not, by itself, say which countries the hiring organization accepts.
Current AI work posts include country-limited roles and region-limited expert projects. We suggest checking eligibility before spending time on an assessment, even when the title says remote.
Check the country requirement in the full post
Read the location field, description, and application questions. Look for an explicit country list or a clear statement that the role is open worldwide.
These details are not equivalent:
- A remote label.
- A hiring organization with international offices.
- An application form with a country dropdown.
- An explicit statement that residents of your country are eligible.
A form accepting your country as an answer is not necessarily confirmation that you can be onboarded. If eligibility is unstated or different parts of the post disagree, ask before continuing.
Residence and verification can matter
Some applications ask candidates to verify their current region, identity, or right to work. Read the actual requirement rather than assuming citizenship, residence, and work authorization mean the same thing.
Do not use a false address or claim a location where you do not live. Ask how travel or a change of residence affects eligibility if that could matter during the project.
If a post only says "US-based", the meaning is unstated unless it explains further. Ask whether it refers to current residence, work authorization, or another requirement.
Check the working hours
Remote work can still require meetings, a weekly commitment, or overlap with a particular time zone. Read the schedule separately from the location rule.
Before accepting, confirm:
- Whether you choose your working hours.
- Whether there are fixed meeting or review times.
- Which time zone those times use.
- Whether the schedule changes with seasonal clock changes.
- Whether the stated hours are available work or a minimum commitment.
Convert any required overlap to your local time for the actual dates. Flexible is not a substitute for a stated schedule.
Verify that you can receive payment
Country eligibility for the work does not answer every payment question. A payment service may have separate rules for receiving funds, account verification, and withdrawal.
Ask which method the hiring organization uses, whether it supports recipients in your country, and what currency you will receive. Confirm fees, minimum payout amounts, and the payment schedule before doing work.

Read the contract and local obligations
Check the contracting party, whether the engagement is employment or independent contracting, and what the agreement says about ending work or resolving payment disputes.
Tax, registration, and work authorization rules depend on your situation and location. Check local official guidance or get qualified advice. This guide cannot determine those obligations for you.

If the source does not state worldwide eligibility, we would not read "remote" as worldwide. Ask for a clear answer before investing time in the application.
